Description

1853-O Double Eagle, AU58
Outstanding Eye Appeal

1853-O $20 AU58 NGC. Winter-1. A single die pair was used for the coinage of 71,000 double eagles at New Orleans in 1853. The reverse shows unfinished areas within the F in OF and the E in AMERICA. Date and mintmark placement confirm the attribution. The date as a whole is collectible in the context of New Orleans twenties, although it hardly survives in Mint State. Even high-end AU coins are rare. This near-Mint piece displays rich lemon-gold patina with satiny fields and hints of luster. Overall strike sharpness is excellent, and the eye appeal exceeds expectations for the grade. Most O-mint double eagles are heavily abraded, but this piece is a pleasant exception to that norm. Census: 29 in 58, 8 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N2998)
