Description

Conditionally Rare 1853-O Double Eagle MS61 NGC

1853-O $20 MS61 NGC. This is the first of the scarce-to-rare double eagle issues from the New Orleans Mint, although it is not nearly as elusive as certain dates that follow. The '53-O is typically found in XF to low-end AU condition, and even at those levels it is both difficult and highly sought-after. Most examples are found with serious marks, but the Mint State specimen offered here is a pleasant exception to that rule, with only a few light abrasions present on each side. The strike is well executed, including on most of Liberty's hair curls, and the original semi-prooflike sheen is intact. The specialist in this series, or in New Orleans gold coinage, may have a considerable wait before another example as fine as this one appears in a public auction. Census: 3 in 61, 1 finer (7/06).
