Description
Attractive Choice XF 1853-O Double Eagle
1853-O $20 XF45 PCGS. In his Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, Doug Winter notes that he is aware of only one die variety for this date. He describes that variety as follows: "All 1853-O double eagles have a Closed 5 in the date. The date is high with the 1 nearly touching the truncation. The mintmark is tall and thin. It is positioned over the left side of the N in TWENTY and comes close to the feathers but does not touch them." This is an attractive khaki-gold specimen with well struck design elements and a few scattered abrasions. Even high point wear confirms the Choice XF grade assessment by PCGS.
