1854 $20 Large Date AU55 NGC. The die dot located on Liberty's neck just to the left of the lower left curl confirms the Large Date variety, which is much scarcer than the Small Date. Indeed, Douglas Winter and Adam Crum in their Type I Double Eagles reference indicate that only about 10% of all 1854 double eagles show a Large Date. This Choice AU specimen displays considerable luster residing on its honey-gold surfaces, along with well struck design elements. Distributed small abrasions are scattered about.
