Description

1854 Liberty Head Double Eagle, AU55
Rare Large Date Variety

1854 $20 Large Date AU55 PCGS. The 1854 Large Date represents a small part of the total mintage of 757,899 double eagles produced at the Philadelphia Mint in that year. Doug Winter and Adam Crum estimate the issue may only account for 10% of the production. Coins in high circulated grades seem to be nearly as rare as Mint State examples of the issue. A diagnostic of the Large Date variety is a die dot on Liberty's neck, located left of the curl.
The present coin is sharply struck, and the die dot shows plainly on the neck. Much original mint luster remains on the surfaces, especially in sheltered areas around the devices. The lightly abraded fields show a few minor scratches behind Liberty's neck and a shallow scuff in the upper obverse field. Population: 12 in 55, 12 finer (10/09).(Registry values: P6)
