1854 $20 Large Date MS61 NGC. Seemingly one of the unsung rarities of the series, and one that serious double eagle collectors seldom see in Mint State, much less have a realistic chance to acquire. This is just the fourth Uncirculated 1854 Large Date twenty we have offered in the past 15 years, two of which graded MS60, one was a net-graded piece, and one was an amazing MS64 coin that brought over $80,000 in 2007.

This example is a wonderful, softly lustrous coin with honey-gold coloration and satinlike surfaces. Sharply struck motifs and nearly unabraded fields show only a few tiny marks, with none of any real consequence. Apparently struck from a logotype meant for silver dollars, this Guide Book variety is one of the hidden treasures of the series and an opportunity for those who appreciate its rarity and subsequent value.
