1854 Liberty Double Eagle, MS64
Scarcer Large Date Variant
Tied for Finest Certified

1854 $20 Large Date MS64 NGC. CAC. It is uncertain when the Large Date variant of the 1854 twenty was discovered, but it had to be prior to 1988, as this variety is listed in Breen's Encyclopedia which was released that year. The date is apparently from a logotype used for silver dollars. We disagree with Garrett and Guth when they state "The date size is not hugely dramatic." The few Large Date 1854 twenties we have seen are immediately obvious as the digits in the date fill almost the entire space available in the exergual area.

The breakdown of 1854 twenties from the S.S. Central America is interesting with 36 Small Date and 7 Large Date coins recovered. This would indicate that this issue is one that still has many coins left to be discovered in dealer's inventories. Many collectors and dealers are not aware of the Large Date's existence, nor of its rarity and subsequent value. What is extraordinary about this coin is not just that it is a Large Date, but its grade. It is tied with one other example at PCGS for finest known (9/18). Most of the coins we have offered in past auctions have been XF or (mostly) AU. This is just the ninth time we have offered an Uncirculated example of the 1854 Large Date twenty in the past 25 years -- representing only six different coins, and one of them was net graded. The surfaces of this spectacular Choice example are remarkably clean and show thick, frosted mint luster on both sides. Even reddish-gold color is seen over both obverse and reverse, and the striking details are sharply defined throughout. Overall eye appeal is terrific.
