Description

1854-S Double Eagle, AU55
Inaugural Branch Mint Twenty

1854-S $20 AU55 NGC. Although the newly opened San Francisco Mint had transitioned from The U.S. Assay Office of Gold and was positioned to function as a fully operational branch mint there were multiple problems during its first year of coinage operations. Shortages of chemicals and personnel issues limited production of most gold denominations except for the double eagle, which achieved a moderate 141,468-piece mintage. Those coins circulated immediately on the West Coast and few examples were put aside since mintmarked coins were of little interest and the double eagle denomination was too large to attract any but the most well-heeled collectors. This Choice About Uncirculated example was one of the relatively few pieces removed from circulation with little wear. Tiny marks and abrasions pepper orange-gold surfaces that retain partial mint luster. The strike was sharp and the reverse is rotated approximately 40° clockwise in relation to the obverse. Eye appeal is strong for the assigned grade. NGC Census: 39 in 55, 78 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1793)
