Description

1854-S Double Eagle, AU58
First Year San Francisco Mint Issue

1854-S $20 AU58 NGC. Numismatically significant as the first year striking of Liberty Head twenty dollar gold from the newly opened San Francisco branch mint, which effectively replaced the various private and territorial gold issues. The mintage of 141,468 double eagles circulated extensively in California and beyond, with very low survival at the near-Mint grade level.

Straw-gold coloration with light orange overtones covers the surfaces of this lovely example. Mildly abraded from a relatively short time in commerce. The strike is solid for the issue, with design elements well-formed including hair curls and obverse stars, along with eagle feather detail on the reverse. Satiny luster covers much of the coin, with luster breaks in the fields and higher areas of the devices. An overall excellent example of the historically important first year San Francisco double eagle issue. NGC Census: 28 in 58, 50 finer (10/25).(Registry values: N1793)
