Description

1854-S Double Eagle, AU58
First Year San Francisco Mint Issue

1854-S $20 AU58 NGC. The San Francisco Mint managed a 141,468-piece inaugural mintage for the 1854-S double eagle during the first year of operations as a Federal branch mint. Much of the gold came from melted down fifty dollar octagonal gold "slugs" that were removed from circulation upon opening of the newly operational branch mint. Shortages of parting acids and other start-up problems limited mintages of most gold coins. Most of the coins circulated immediately in West Coast commerce. This is a near-Mint example with frosty orange-gold surfaces and light abrasions from a brief time in circulation. Like many of the first-year twenties struck at the San Francisco Mint, the reverse is rotated about 25° compared to the obverse. NGC Census: 28 in 58, 50 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1793)
