Description

1854-S Double Eagle, AU58
Outstanding Original Surfaces

1854-S $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Shortages of parting acids at the San Francisco Mint during its first year of operation limited production of double eagles by restricting the amount of bullion that could be prepared for coinage. This problem was remedied in 1855, but the 1854 double eagle was left with a marginally small mintage (for the period) of little more than 140,000 pieces. Most of these experienced extensive circulation in Gold Rush-era California. Mint State survivors are scarce, and even high-end AU coins are elusive. This near-Mint representative displays a bold strike and lustrous, frosty fields. There are no heavy abrasions, and only slight friction is seen over the high points of the devices. The medium green-gold patina is original. Population: 4 in 58, 54 finer; CAC: 4 in 58, 4 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N1793)
