Description

1854-S Double Eagle, MS61
Eye-Appealing Mint State Example
Seldom Offered This Fine

1854-S $20 MS61 NGC. The San Francisco Mint began coinage operations in 1854, occupying the same physical building that had once housed the San Francisco Assay Office, run under the private firm Moffat & Co., which was later reorganized into Curtis, Perry & Ward after John Little Moffat left the firm. The branch mint brought the facility a full suite of coinage resources not available to the assay office itself, but its production of double eagles in 1854 was for a time hindered by a shortage of the parting acids necessary to refine gold deposits. As a result, only 141,468 double eagles were struck, and Mint State survivors are scarce today in any grade.

This is a well-struck piece with warm honey-gold mint luster. The surfaces are smooth and eye-appealing for the MS61 grade. Census: 5 in 61, 42 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N2998)
