Description

1854-S Double Eagle, MS62
Sharp and Lustrous

1854-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint began coinage operations in 1854, focusing primarily on double eagles with a mintage of 141,468 pieces. Less than half as much gold was used for the ten dollar denomination, producing 123,826 examples of that coin, and merely a few hundred quarter eagles and half eagles were struck, apparently to test the dies for those denominations. Today, the two small gold issues are major rarities -- trophy coins in the truest sense -- while the eagle and double eagle are collectible. Even so, the double eagle does become conditionally rare in attractive Mint State condition. Only a few dozen coins survive in MS62 or better grades.

This piece boasts a sharp strike and rich butter-gold and peach luster. The surfaces are somewhat satiny, possibly from a shipwreck, though mostly devoid of notable abrasions. A cluster of marks in the lower left obverse field is all that denies a finer grade. PCGS Population: 22 in 62, 22 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N4719)
