Description
Satiny 1854-S Double Eagle, MS64
1854-S $20 MS64 NGC. CAC. This was the first year that gold coins were manufactured at the San Francisco Mint, with most of the production focused on double eagles. The issue was widely distributed, resulting in many specimens seen today being heavily worn. Mint State pieces, especially in the higher levels, are difficult to locate. This near-Gem possesses satiny luster on peach-gold surfaces imbued with hints of mint-green and apricot. The design features are uniformly defined, and just a few minor marks prevent the attainment of a higher grade. A field graze to the left of Liberty's mouth and chin and a small mark to the lower right of star 6 identify the piece. Census: 9 in 64, 1 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N7079)
