Description

1854-S Double Eagle, XF45
Introductory San Francisco Issue

1854-S $20 XF45 PCGS. Large S mintmark, as always. A few light marks and smooth circulation wear are the grade-determining factors on this Choice XF inaugural San Francisco Mint issue. The new mint managed to strike 141,468 double eagles in its first year of branch mint production. Most of that mintage circulated on the West Coast, which had a seemingly insatiable need for twenty dollar gold coin. Traces of mint luster remain throughout the attractive medium-gold surfaces.(Registry values: N991)
