Description

1855-O Double Eagle, AU53
Mint-Made Strike-Throughs
A Rare New Orleans Issue

1855-O $20 AU53 PCGS. Winter-1. While the 1854-O and 1856-O double eagles are the great New Orleans rarities of the series, the 1855-O is nearly as rare. Only 8,000 pieces were struck, and the survivorship is likely only several dozen pieces. Most are in middle circulated grades, with AU coins being high end. NGC lists a few MS60 and MS61 submissions, but none are in Mint State at PCGS.

The current AU53 coin came to us raw. It displays moderate luster in the fields and bold definition throughout the devices, with only slight handling wear that leaves all design details present. Contrary to most New Orleans gold, this piece is exceptionally clean, devoid of significant abrasions. Uniquely, it has three small mint-made strike-throughs on the obverse, two in the left field one by the 1 in the date, which will serve as pedigree markers. PCGS Population: 12 in 53, 7 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N4719)
