Description

1855-O Liberty Twenty, XF45
Low 8,000-Coin Mintage

1855-O $20 XF45 PCGS. Sandwiched between the extremely low-mintage 1854-O and 1856-O rarities is the 1855-O double eagle, itself a low-mintage issue from a total production of just 8,000 coins. It is believed that only about 1% of that mintage still survives today, a mere 70 to 80 coins according to Doug Winter in the second edition of his book on New Orleans gold coinage.
Considerable luster remains on both sides of this attractive yellow-gold specimen, with splashes of deeper orange on the high points. The surfaces are lightly marked, as expected for the grade. Population: 16 in 45, 19 finer (5/11).
