Description

1855-S Double Eagle, MS62
Broken A, Full E; Ex: S.S. Central America

1855-S $20 Broken A, Full E, S.S. Central America #2 (with Pinch) MS62 PCGS. Rich orange-gold surfaces contain significant Mint luster. A mark from star 3 towards the philtrum, a few thin marks near stars 12 and 13, and a scattering of short abrasions on the right reverse field, are all that warrant mention. While most of the double eagles found in the S.S. Central America hoard are the famous 1857-S, with most of the remaining being 1856-S, about 5% are 1855-S, with an even smaller contingent of 1854-S examples. As with most of the other issues, the vast majority of Mint State survivors came from the S.S. Central America shipwreck, and the 1855-S is no exception. The beauty of this coin adds to its desirability, and we have not sold an example of this variety that is housed in an enlarged PCGS holder with a pinch of California gold dust from the seabed.
