Description

1855-S Twenty Dollar, MS62
Sharply Struck
S.S. Central America 14B

1855-S $20 Faint S, Variety 14B, MS62 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 6341. The mintage for the 1855-S Liberty Head double eagle increased dramatically from the previous year to a total of 879,675 coins struck at the San Francisco branch mint. All have the distinctive Slanting 5's in the date. Variety 14B has a "Faint S" of medium size, although clearly visible with this well struck specimen. Doug Winter describes the 1855-S as "one of the better-made Type One double eagles from this mint."

Attractive orange-gold with rose highlights contributes to the pleasing eye appeal. The luster has a satiny appearance, illuminating the fields and devices. Grade-consistent contact marks do not detract from the beauty of this coin. This example is sharply struck with design elements being well-formed including clear definition of the hair curls, stars with full radial lines, and nicely detailed reverse design features. With all consideration, a splendid type coin for the Type One Liberty Head twenty dollar gold.(Registry values: P5)
