Description
1855-S Double Eagle, MS61
Infrequently Seen Finer
1855-S $20 MS61 NGC. Although higher grade pieces
occasionally come on the market, MS61 is about the finest grade
that is reasonably available. We can only find records of six
auction appearances in higher grades during the last decade, and
only 15 higher grade auction records in the last 30 years. Those
records indicate two years will pass before a finer piece is
offered. This lovely Mint State example enjoys excellent luster with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and splendid eye appeal. The strike is bold and both sides exhibit only trivial scattered marks of little consequence. In fact, our grade opinion is higher than that of NGC. Census: 11 in 61, 9 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916, Greysheet# 9854)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
