Description
1855-S Double Eagle, MS61
Frosty Original Luster
1855-S $20 MS61 NGC. The second San Francisco double eagle
issue, like the first, experienced heavy circulation; Mint State
survivors were very rare in any grade until the discovery of nearly
100 Uncirculated examples among the thousands of double eagles
recovered from the S.S. Central America. Nonetheless, Mint
State examples remain scarce and are rarely seen finer than MS62.
This MS61 example is quite appealing for the grade, with
well-defined motifs and swirling luster that enliven the
yellow-orange surfaces. A lack of major abrasions heightens the
visual merit and only trivial chatter on the obverse precludes a
finer grade. Census: 29 in 61, 49 finer (5/15).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916, Greysheet# 9854)
