Description
1855-S Double Eagle, Lustrous MS61
1855-S $20 MS61 NGC. The obverse of this Mint State 1855-S twenty shows more greenish-gold patina with orange-gold around the peripheries, while the reverse shows orange-gold predominating. Both sides, however, show top-notch eye appeal. The grade is explained by numerous abrasions on each side, but none of them are so large as to appear singly without magnification, together creating an effect rather of slightly dimmed luster. The strike is well-executed, despite the die lapping that shows on Liberty's hairbun and some of the right-side obverse stars. Census: 14 in 61, 10 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916, Greysheet# 9854)
