Description
1855-S Double Eagle, MS61
Elusive in Mint State
1855-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Medium S mintmark. Upon opening the
San Francisco Mint in 1854, miners and bankers had a nearby option
for converting gold to coin, rather than the expensive and risky
shipments to New Orleans of Philadelphia. Just the second year of
double eagle production at San Francisco, with an exceptional
mintage of 879,675 pieces, more than double the production at
Philadelphia and New Orleans, combined. Despite the high mintage,
PCGS has certified only 99 Mint State 1855-S double eagles, and
only 51 of those are graded finer than the present example. A
lovely example, this 1855-S twenty exhibits sharp design details
and brilliant orange-gold luster with scattered and inconsequential
marks on each side. Population: 14 in 61, 11 finer (3/17).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916, Greysheet# 9854)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
