Description

1855-S Type One Twenty, MS62
Ex: S.S. Central America, CAC

1855-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Variety 14-E. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 6509. Bold S Mintmark. By all appearances, this eye-catching 1855-S survived the shipwreck in mint-fresh condition, apparently with little reclamation and conservation required. Gleaming sun-gold surfaces display a ring of orange-gold at the rims, while the fields are semireflective, with minimal seawater effect.

More than three hundred 1855-S double eagles were brought up from the S.S. Central America, plus another 57 examples from the S.S. Republic. Prior to those finds, the average 1855-S was seen only in VF to XF condition. A sharp strike adds to the considerable eye appeal of this outstanding Mint State coin. Housed in its original gold foil label PCGS holder, with CAC endorsement. Population (all varieties): 48 in 62, 32 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916, Greysheet# 9854)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
