Description

1855-S Type One Twenty, MS63
Ex:
S.S. Central America

1855-S $20 MS63 NGC. Ex: S.S. Central America. Medium S. This die variety is not listed among the recognized Central America variants, as it shows a broken A in STATES as well as an incomplete top of the E in AMERICA. This was only the second year of production for the San Francisco mint, and 879,675 double eagles were struck. More than 300 1855-S twenties were recovered from the S.S. Central America, a small percentage compared to the number of 1857-S double eagles but Type One twenties are generally unavailable to collectors, especially in high grade. This is a brightly lustrous example that shows even reddish-gold color. The surfaces are lightly marked with one exception: There is a prominent horizontal abrasion across the neck of Liberty.(Registry values: N4719)
