Description

1856-S Choice AU Double Eagle

1856-S $20 AU55 NGC. The discovery of the S.S. Central America, which held more than 1,000 1856-S double eagles, changed the rarity of the issue. While the insert does not designate this Choice AU coming from this shipwreck, it might well have been part of that hoard. In any event, the honey-gold surfaces display luster in the protected areas and well defined devices. Distributed light marks are not serious.(Registry values: N1793)
