1856-S $20 Full Serif, Right S MS63 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Variety-17D. SSCA 6078. The S.S. Central America provided collectors with thousands of nice Mint State Type Two twenties, but most of those were dated 1857-S. PCGS has certified a total of 70 MS63 1856-S twenties, compared to 830 1857-S pieces in that grade. The difference becomes even more pronounced in higher grades. PCGS numismatists nonetheless were able to identify several different '56-S die varieties, including 17D, the Full Serif, Right S. Only seven examples of 17D are certified by PCGS, with the finest as MS61. For some reason, the present piece is unlisted in the 17D PCGS population. It is well struck and thoroughly lustrous. There is no discoloration, or any other evidence that it spend more than a century on the Atlantic Ocean floor. Smooth aside from a cluster of faint marks within the reverse circle of stars. Housed in a gold label holder.(Registry values: P4)
