Description
1856-S No Motto Double Eagle, MS61
Frosty San Francisco Coin
1856-S $20 MS61 NGC. More than 1,400 1856-S double eagles
were found during the two major S.S. Central America
recovery operations. Many of those coins were Mint State examples
including some Gem Uncirculated and finer pieces. This MS61 double
eagle, by appearances, is not one of the shipwreck coins. Richly
frosted olive-gold surfaces show no signs of conservation but the
exact provenance of this coin is unknown. The A in STATES is broken
with only a tiny portion of the crossbar remaining -- only one die
pair among the S.S. Central America recoveries shows the
Broken A feature. The reverse on this coin is rotated about 20°
clockwise in relation to the obverse.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2692, PCGS# 8919, Greysheet# 9864)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
