    Description

1856-S Twenty Dollar, No Serif, Left S
    MS62, From the
    S.S. Central America

1856-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 17O. Ex. S.S. Central America. SSCA 5656. The various S-mint Liberty Head double eagle issues that were recovered from the S.S. Central America, dating from 1854 through 1857, are extremely popular with collectors. Our FUN 2012 offering of the Galt's Gulch Collection included some memorably high-grade examples that performed quite well at auction. The variety refers to the top left (missing) serif on the U in UNITED, with the S mintmark tilted slightly left at the top. This MS62 specimen offers copious luster over apricot-gold surfaces that show a few contact marks on the cheek and lower neck of Liberty. Population: 2 in 62, 39 finer (5/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2692, PCGS# 8919)
