Description

Select 1856-S Double Eagle
S.S. Central America

1856-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Variety 17D. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 5942. Variety 17D is described by Robert Evans as "Full Serif, S Tilted Right." The "Full Serif" refers to the A in STATES and the E in AMERICA, which have broken crossbars on some die varieties of 1856-S twenties but are intact on the present coin, likely due to a Mint repair of the working reverse die. Regardless of variety, the 1856-S is scarce relative to the 1857-S in Mint State due to the large quantity of the latter from the S.S.C.A. shipwreck.
The present thoroughly lustrous piece is sun-gold overall with glimpses of deeper orange toning along the obverse periphery. Well struck and attractive with only minor marks. Certified in a gold label holder. A mahogany faux book from the New York Mint is included in the lot, along with an unsigned certificate of authenticity.(Registry values: N4719)
