Choice Mint State 1856-S Double Eagle
    The DiBello-Bass Specimen

1856-S $20 MS64 PCGS. While the S.S. Central America is the source of the vast majority of high-end 1856-S double eagles, this Choice coin's place in the numismatic record predates the ship's rediscovery. The coin itself is a marvel of orange casts across swirling yellow-gold surfaces, pleasingly detailed with a small dig at Liberty's cheek precluding an even finer designation. The holder has a small discoloration in the plastic at the date area which should not be interpreted as a flaw on the coin itself.
Ex: Gaston DiBello (Stack's, 5/1970), lot 1213; Harry W. Bass, Jr.; The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection - Part IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 814.
