    1856-S Double Eagle, Unc Details
Probably From the Fort Capron Hoard

1856-S $20 -- Sea Salvaged -- NGC Details. Unc. Believed to be a part of the Fort Capron Hoard of 1856-S twenties that are sand-and-surf-etched coins. It is odd that not that many years ago the 1856-S was prohibitively rare in high grades. Today more than 1,000 mostly Uncirculated and largely unblemished pieces from the S.S. Central America are known, and added to that are a unknown number of the same date and mintmark from a different source. This piece shows the sharp definition usually associated with coins from the Fort Capron Hoard. The surfaces are only slightly abraded, and the coin's color is attractive and multi-hued. However, as one would expect from a sea-salvaged coin, the mint luster is greatly subdued.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2011), lot 4467, which realized $2,530.
