Description

1857 Double Eagle, MS60
Rare Mint State Survivor

1857 $20 MS60 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Dallas Bank Browning / Gilded Age Collection. The plate coin in Bowers' U.S. Liberty Head $20 Double Eagles: The Gilded Age of Coinage (2014). The 1857 is very scarce in mint condition, and this MS60 representative is far finer than its grade suggests. In fact, the Stack's Bowers cataloger noted in this coin's 2014 appearance: "In our opinion, if all MS-60 coins were this nice there would be no reason to seek MS-63 coins." A pinpoint strike, vibrant frosty luster, and amazing orange-gold color are highly desirable qualities. Inarguably high-end for the grade. Population: 11 in 60, 58 finer. CAC: 3 in 60, 11 finer (7/18).
Ex: Dallas Bank Collection (Stack's, 10/2001), lot 18; Gilded Age Collection (Stack's Bowers, 8/2014), lot 12015, which realized $12,925.(Registry values: N2998)
