1857 Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Vivid Color, Frosty Luster
1857 $20 MS61 NGC. From a mintage of 439,375 pieces, the
1857 Liberty double eagle is an elusive issue in Mint State grades.
Only two examples of this date were recovered from the wreck of the
S.S. Central America, and 26 coins were salvaged from the
S.S. Republic. This attractive MS61 example exhibits
well-detailed design elements and vivid orange-gold surfaces, with
a scattering of minor contact marks on both sides. Census: 13 in
