Description

1857 Double Eagle, MS61
Very Scarce in Full Mint State

1857 $20 MS61 PCGS. There were no large discoveries of 1857 P-Mint double eagles among the famous shipwrecks, unlike the 1857-S, which was recovered by the thousands. As a result, Mint State examples of the Philadelphia issue rank among the premier rarities of Type One twenties. Only a few light abrasions mark the surfaces of this MS61 example, with frosty and lustrous rich-gold color and sharply defined raised devices, save for minor weakness at a couple of high point hair curls. Population: 22 in 61, 33 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2693, PCGS# 8920, Greysheet# 9793)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
