Description

1857 Liberty Twenty, MS62
Very Rare Any Finer

1857 $20 MS62 NGC. The 1857 Liberty double eagle claims a substantial mintage of 439,375 pieces and the issue is not difficult to locate in circulated grades up to the XF-AU level. Unfortunately, the 1857 Philadelphia issue was not as well-represented in recent shipwreck finds as its San Francisco counterpart, with only two examples recovered from the S.S. Central America and 26 coins found in the wreck of the S.S. Republic. As a result, the 1857 is rare in MS62 condition, and a prime condition rarity in higher grades.

The present coin is a lustrous peach-gold example, with sharply detailed design elements and surprisingly few contact marks for the grade. Overall eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 14 in 62, 3 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N4719)
