Description

1857 Liberty Head Twenty, MS62
Seldom Available in Finer Grades

1857 $20 MS62 NGC. Reddish-gold accents visit the recesses of this sharply lustrous and original double eagle. Just 28 survivors of this scarce Philadelphia date were pulled from the S.S. Central America and S.S. Republic, slightly altering the available population yet the issue remains rare in Mint State.

The present coin is shows no evidence of seawater surface, with lustrous, frosted apricot-gold patina and a scattering of small marks that determine the grade. The strike is slightly weak at the centers, with rounding of Liberty's high-point curls. PCGS and NGC combined have certified just seven numerically finer coins. NGC Census: 14 in 62, 3 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N4719)
