Description

1857 Double Eagle, MS62
Underrated P-Mint Issue

1857 $20 MS62 NGC. The San Francisco counterpart to this Philadelphia issue is famously available through most Mint State levels thanks to the recovery of 5,000 examples aboard the S.S. Central America. Merely two 1857-P twenty dollar gold coins were located in that hoard. The 1857 is a rare date in mint condition, typically found no finer than MS62. A handful of Select examples are known, and probably two near-Gems rank atop the Condition Census.

Strike is often problematic, but not so here. The stars, curls, and feathers are well-defined. The crossbar in the A in STATES and the top bar on the E in AMERICA are broken. Soft mint frost over lightly abraded, medium yellow-gold surfaces. A luster disturbance occurs in the lower right obverse field. One of the underrated Philadelphia issues from the mid-to-late 1850s. Census: 14 in 62, 3 finer (11/17).(Registry values: N4719)
