Description

1857 Twenty Dollar, MS62
Conditionally Scarce, Strong Eye Appeal

1857 $20 MS62 PCGS. The Mint State population data for this Philadelphia double eagle reflects relatively minor increases due to shipwreck finds. While thousands upon thousands of 1857-S twenties were found from the two S.S. Central America recovery operations, a mere three 1857 P-mint examples were brought up from the depths. The S.S. Republic yielded an additional 26 1857 double eagles in all grades, with fewer than a dozen of those pieces in Mint State. The present MS62 example is housed in a PCGS Gen. 4.0 holder in use from 1998 to 2002, but no provenance is indicated on the holder. The frosty and pleasing orange-gold surfaces show canary-yellow, peach-gold, and warm-gray accents over smooth surfaces that reveal only minor marks and abrasions. A sharp strike and plentiful eye appeal recommend this attractive MS62 coin for any well-formed double eagle collection. PCGS Population: 32 in 62, 7 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N4719)
