Description
Elusive 1857 Double Eagle MS62
1857 $20 MS62 PCGS. Unlike its S-mint counterpart, which was found in quantities when the S.S. Central America was recovered, the P-mint from this year is quite scarce in Mint State and almost never offered at the Select level. Satiny in texture and especially well defined, only minimal abrasions are seen on the reverse of the coin. Wispy slidemarks on and to the left of the portrait explain what would otherwise be a conservative grade. Population: 8 in 62, 3 finer (11/04).From The Richard J. Chouinard Collection of United States Coins, Part One.(#8920) (Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2693, PCGS# 8920, Greysheet# 9793)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
