Description

1857 Double Eagle, MS63
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS
Ex: Harry Bass

1857 $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Unlike its San Francisco Mint counterpart, the 1857 Philadelphia Mint Liberty double eagle was not well-represented in recent shipwreck finds. Despite the substantial mintage of 439,375 pieces, the 1857 is rare in Mint State grades today. Examples at the MS63 level of preservation are very rare and finer examples are virtually unobtainable.

This impressive Select specimen traces its history to the famous collection of Harry W. Bass, Jr., one of the most advanced gold collections of all time. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's claws, and the lustrous yellow and orange-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 3 in 63, 1 finer (6/13).
Ex: Julian Leidman; purchased by Harry Bass on 9/25/1970; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part III (Bowers and Merena, 5/2000), lot 791.(Registry values: N7079)
