Description

1857-O Liberty Double Eagle, AU50
Few Finer Survivors

1857-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Following the low New Orleans mintages of 1854-O through 1856-O double eagles, production increased to a modest 30,000 coins in 1857, more than double the total of the previous three years combined. Despite the production, examples are elusive with only about 200 survivors in all grades. This piece has deep honey-gold surfaces with splashes of pale blue on the high points. Insignificant handling marks are evident in the fields. Nearly full luster remains with hints of reflectivity in the protected areas. Population: 23 in 50, 25 finer (5/11).
