Description
1857-O Double Eagle, AU53
Less Than 150 Known in All Grades
1857-O $20 AU53 NGC. Winter-1. Original white-gold surfaces
exhibit even coloration throughout. Strike is strong on the obverse
and reverse alike, even on the left side of the obverse, which is
notoriously weak on examples of this issue. Minor to moderate
abrasions exist on both sides, with a serpentine mark above the
eye, old nick in the field between stars 12 and 13, and a few
connected dings under OF representing the only notable ones.
Despite a mintage of 30,000 coins, this issue is quite rare, with
the surviving population likely numbering under 150 coins. This is
the norm for New Orleans gold, however, as a combination of
extensive circulation and limited collector interest led to low
survival rates.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2694, PCGS# 8921, Greysheet# 9883)
