Description

1857-O Liberty Double Eagle, AU58
Only 30,000 Coins Struck

1857-O $20 AU58 NGC. Winter-1. The 1857-O ranks among the scarcer New Orleans issues in this series, although it is clearly not as rare as the 1854-O and 1856-O, or even the 1855-O. O-mint double eagle specialists are well aware that 1857-O examples are obtainable for a price with patience, although the date is notably challenging to acquire in AU condition. Only a few pieces are known with a full Mint State classification.

This AU58 example displays pleasing honey-gold color with slight remnants of canary-gold luster around the well-struck raised motifs. The central devices are boldly rendered, showing only light, expected wear on the high points. As with virtually all 1857-O survivors, abrasions are seen -- in this case, a series of disconnected bold marks running from B of LIBERTY through the hair, and across the cheekbone. Other marks are sporadic and minor in comparison. Plentiful eye appeal remains for this challenging New Orleans twenty. Census: 31 in 58 (2 in 58+), 5 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N2998)
