1857-O $20 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC Details. AU. The 1857-O double eagle is a scarce date from a mintage of 30,000 pieces. Perhaps 175-200 examples survive today in all grades. The present coin is an attractive example, in spite of the unfortunate cleaning noted on the holder. The surfaces are bright greenish-gold, with a deeply reflective prooflike quality. Much original detail remains on the design elements, and there are strong elements of field-device contrast when the coin is tilted in the light.
