Description

1857-S $20 AU55 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. This reverse die is unrecorded in Robert Evans' July 2000 Numismatist article, presumably because it was struck too late in 1857 to participate in the September 1857 S.S. Central America shipwreck. The mintmark has an unusually small lower serif (referred to as an "Inverted S" by NGC, although the mintmark could have been unevenly entered instead) and is located far right and too close to the letter N. The E in AMERICA has a broken upper crossbar. The coin itself is partly lustrous and refreshingly unabraded.(Registry values: N1793)
