Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS64
Ex: S.S. Central America
From the Historic First Recovery Period

1857-S $20 Bold S, Variety 20B, MS64 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA #0634. Although 1857-S double eagles in Mint State were recovered by the thousands from the S.S. Central America shipwreck, unceasing demand continues among collectors. This near-Gem example remains in its original gold foil PCGS holder and displays remarkably smooth, lustrous surfaces with only a few minor luster grazes that determine the Choice Uncirculated grade. A sharp strike exists throughout the tempting orange-gold surfaces, while traces of deep-orange patina linger at the borders. Plentiful eye appeal augments the decidedly high technical merit.
