Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS63 Prooflike
Broken A Variety

1857-S $20 Broken A, Variety 20E, MS63 Prooflike PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 4591. Semi-prooflike surfaces contain red-gold and white-gold hues, with the former deepening in select peripheral areas. Strike is razor sharp throughout. Abrasions are largely limited to the right field on the reverse, where obverse abrasions on the central cheek and on the chin limit the grade. Overall eye appeal is excellent.
Almost all surviving 1857-S double eagles stem from the S.S. Central America hoard. Several varieties exist, all using Obverse 20. The present example mates that obverse to Reverse E, which is easily identified by the broken crossbar of the A in STATES. This variety is only known on coins recovered from this shipwreck, providing a fascinating insight into the potentially large amount of American numismatic history that was lost to the melting pots of foreign central banks. Many countries that imported American gold coins, such as the U.K., preferred to melt them down and recoin them into domestic issues. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.(Registry values: P2)
