Description

Pleasing Choice 1857-S Double Eagle

1857-S $20 MS64 NGC. Although the NGC insert omits any pedigree, the present near-Gem was undoubtedly recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. It is the Bold S die variety, as described by Robert Evans in the July 2000 Numismatist, identified by the hair-thin diagonal die scratch between the TA in STATES. This orange-gold example is well struck and lustrous with clean surfaces. Dappled steel-gray toning is noted on the lower left reverse border.(Registry values: N4719)
