Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS65
Frosty and Pristine, CAC Approved

1857-S $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Variety 20-A. Although not pedigreed to the S.S. Central America on the holder, this Gem 1857-S double eagle represents the so-called Spiked Shield variety that was common among the shipwreck coins recovered. Its luster and appearance also agree with norms for Central America coins. Frosty, vibrant surfaces yield rich orange-gold patina that deepens around the borders. The prime focal areas are particularly clean, especially on Liberty's cheek. Sharpness throughout the design elements completes the strong visual appeal. Few finer 1857-S double eagles are known, even including all Central America varieties. Population: 57 in 65 (9 in 65+), 17 finer. CAC: 19 in 65, 9 finer (10/24).(Registry values: N4719)
